KOZHIKODE: Laying marble requires artistic sense. But those who earn their livelihood laying marble flooring rarely venture into the more creative field of painting. Arun Odumbra, however, is different. He lays marble-flooring for a living, but paints to satisfy his hunger for creative expression. Arun Odumbra's paintings, which are on show at Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery, have been attracting art lovers. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mayor M. Bhaskaran on Friday. Titled `Kalam - 2006,' the exhibition showcases a wide range of themes. It has colourful depiction of scenes from social life as well as expressions of protest against degradation of moral values. A few are delightful landscapes that have captured the beauty of nature in its diverse moods. Though a self-taught artist, Arun has displayed, through his 32 paintings on show, his skills in using water colour, oil, charcoal and pen. Also among the exhibits are paintings that remind the viewer of the works of Raja Ravi Varma. This is Arun's first exhibition. He is a native of Olavanna in Kozhikode.
