THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State unit of the Youth Congress (YC) feels that improper selection of candidates and undue appeasement of community leaders led to the United Democratic Front's defeat in the elections. Its State president K. P. Anilkumar told presspersons here on Sunday that merit had been given a go by in the selection of candidates. Favourites of party leaders found place in the list. Norms were ignored and hardly any new faces or women found place in the list. The Congress lost around 10 to 15 seats on account of this. "The party was asking for the debacle," he said. Communal appeasement by the front benefited only the leaders of the communal outfits. It did not benefit the ordinary members of different communities, he said. Mr. Anilkumar demanded an inquiry into the allegations against Public Works Minister P.J. Joseph. He should not be allowed to continue as Minister while the inquiry is on. He said that Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan, who spoke against corruption, seemed to be playing a different tune now.
