Belgaum: The polling to fill vacancies in 77 gram panchayats spread over 10 taluks in the district passed off peacefully here on Sunday. Of the 111 seats, for 57 seats candidates had been declared elected unopposed while polling was conducted for 47 seats except in Ramdurg taluk where both the candidates in the fray were declared elected unopposed. Polling could not be conducted for seven seats in Khanapur taluk as no nominations were filed. All the 17 candidates in Saudi Gram Panchayat of Saundatti taluk and 33 candidates in Bailhongal taluk were elected unopposed. According to preliminary reports reaching district headquarters here, about 60 per cent polling was recorded in different polling stations. Taluk-wise break-up shows that of the 14 gram panchayat seats in Belgaum taluk, nine were elected unopposed while polling was held for five seats. Similarly, of the seven seats in Khanapur taluk, polling was conducted for three seats as four candidates had been declared elected unopposed. The counting of ballot papers will be taken up on Monday.
