KARWAR: Tar balls were found on a large scale on the Polem beach near the Karnataka-Goa border and to a smaller extent at the Devbag beach on Sunday, indicating the emulsification of the oil spill from a ship, which ran aground off the Karwar coast. Experts from the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Naval Material Research Laboratory and ITOPS, an international organisation, visited the beaches in Karwar on Sunday. According to them, oil deposit on the Devbagh beach was marginal. There was no trace of oil on the Tagore Beach here. Deputy Commissioner Ritesh Kumar Singh said the oil had formed a layer of one-cm thickness on the Devbag beach. The polluted sand would be removed from the beach tomorrow.
