Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) will hold a satyagraha in New Delhi on November 1 to protest against the move of the State Government to observe Suvarna Karnataka that day. A resolution to this effect was taken at the Pre-Monsoon Session of the Kodava Parliament, a statement from CNC secretary general N.U. Nachappa said here on Sunday. The Suvarna Karnataka celebrations would be meaningless unless the State Government conceded the demands of the CNC, Mr. Nachappa said. They were: creation of a Codava Autonomous Region, encompassing the erstwhile 45 "nads" (cluster of villages); according primitive tribal status to Kodavas under Article 340 and 342 of the Constitution; providing Constitutional special guarantee under Article 371 for customary personal law, culture and heritage of the Kodavas; right to political self-determination, linguistic and ethnic minority status and universal recognition of the Kodava race. Another resolution said the CNC would encourage Kodavas to make use of English alphabets for the Kodava language instead of leaning towards Kannada. The resolution congratulated Mr. Nachappa for drawing the attention of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, New Delhi, to the demand for primitive tribal status to the Kodavas. The Codava National Council would prove that the demand for primitive tribal status was justified, the resolution stated.
