Seminars, talks to mark Environment Day

Education Department, KSSP take the initiative

THRISSUR: Several programmes are being arranged in different parts of the district by various organisations to coincide with the World Environment Day on Monday.

The Education Department in the district is organising a week-long programme in the all the upper primary schools, high schools and higher secondary schools in the district to create environmental awareness among the students, with the active participation of the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) and the district panchayat. As part of this, selected students themselves will deliver Environmental Day lectures in every class room in all the schools. The `lecture notes' for this will be prepared through discussion jointly by the teachers and students under the science club conveners, the deputy director of education P.K. Valliamma said. The lectures will touch up on `Deserts and desertification,' which is the focal theme of this year's World Environment Day programmes.

Plans are also afoot to conduct environmental seminars in all the schools with the participation of parents, students, teachers, people's representatives and environmentalists who are working in each local area. The students from the schools in that area will present the theme papers in those seminars also. The Oushadhi, the State Medicinal Plant Board and Oisca International are jointly launching medicinal plant cultivation drives
