Vijaya Thayanban joins DMK

CHENNAI: Vijaya Thayanban, secretary of the women's wing of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday.

Ms. Thayanban, along with the organiser of the Saidapet unit of the MDMK's women's wing V. Prema, called on Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi and joined the party, says a DMK release.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko said in a statement that Ms.Thayanban was expelled from the primary membership of the party for violating organisational discipline. - Special Correspondent

Government urged to open more ITIs

CHENNAI: The need for opening government industrial training institutes in Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Perambalur, Tiruvellore, Sivaganga, Tiruvarur and Krishnagiri was stressed by Director of Employment and Training P. Sivagami at a meeting convened by Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan here on Friday. She wanted the Government to start ITIs in places where private parties were not willing.

The director suggested that steps be taken to admit more women students. Though there was 30 per cent reservation for women, the response was poor.

The Minister said since the government had decided to give doles to unemployed, the department should work out a plan of action for its smooth implementation. — Special Correspondent

61 more refugees arrive

Ramanathapuram: With the arrival of 61 refugees on Sunday, the number of Sri Lankan refugees, who landed at various places of the Rameswaram Island, has gone up to 2,481.

Sources said 61 refugees, including 22 women and 16 children, belonging to 21 families, arrived in four boats. While two came to Palam area near Dhanushkodi, the others landed the refugees at Olaikuda and Kundhukal. The refugees were from Thirukadalur, Veeran Nagar areas of Trincomalee.

Minister pulls up officials

VELLORE: PWD Minister Durai Murugan pulled up district officials, including the Collector, for ``poor arrangements" made for a function organised in connection with the distribution of rice at Rs. 2 a kg at a function in Sarbanamedu here on Sunday.

Irked by the absence of a shamiana to accommodate the public who were sitting in the hot sun on plastic chairs (there was a shamiana on the dais), the Minister called upon the officials to change their attitude. "You should change your attitude, or else, I will make you change your attitude. Whoever it is has to face the consequences if he or she does not change one's attitude." — Special Correspondent

Tribute to Ramani

CHENNAI: The State secretariat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has paid tributes to veteran Communist leader K.Ramani who passed away on May 30.

A resolution adopted by the party unit here on Sunday said Ramani had set an example for selfless service during his public life that spanned over seven decades. He played a pivotal role in organising and unifying the working class. Beginning his life as a textile mill worker, he became an outstanding leader, braving difficulties faced by his family, it said.

He served the Communist movement in different capacities. He was a member of the national council of the undivided Communist Party of India. He served the CPI(M) as State secretariat member for 30 years. He played an outstanding role as MP and MLA, it said. - Special Correspondent

Advocate murdered

TIRUNELVELI : The Sankarankovil police have arrested a woman for allegedly murdering her husband, an advocate.

The police said A. Thomas Rajan (35) of Sankarankovil Town, against whom as many as 12 cases are pending in various police stations, had a quarrel with his wife, T. Mariammal (32), allegedly in an inebriated condition, on Friday night. As the argument intensified Ms. Mariammal, mother of three children including two girls, allegedly hacked him to death. The police arrested Ms. Mariammal.

Special buses

TIRUNELVELI : The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has made arrangements to operate special buses to all waterfalls at Courtallam.

An official statement said four buses would be operated from Tenkasi to Courtallam during weekdays and the number would be increased to six during holidays and weekends.

While 3 buses would be operated between Courtallam and Five Falls during weekdays, 8 buses would be operated on this route during holidays and weekends. Three buses would be operated on the Courtallam - Old Courtallam route during weekdays and the number would be increased to 6 during holidays and weekends. Special buses would be operated between Five Falls and Tenkasi to clear extra rush, the statement said. — Staff Reporter

Dies in road accident

TIRUCHI: R. Nepolean (19) of Poonampalayam village near Manachanallur was killed when he was knocked down by a speeding bus on Friday night. Nepolean was seriously injured in the incident and was admitted to the KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed on Saturday. The Manachanallur police are investigating.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 113.64 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 5,437 cusecs and the outflow 2,000 cusecs.

One arrested

ERODE: The Chennimalai police on Sunday arrested Ramasamy (75) for manufacturing firecrackers in a factory near his house at Ammapalayam. On Saturday evening, two persons died in an explosion at the factory. The police said that Ramasamy was permitted to produce only the Vanams (rockets), but he was producing some firecrackers without licence. The firecrackers exploded on Saturday killing the duo. - Staff Reporter

Medical camp held

THENI : A total of 229 patients were identified for cataract operation at medical camps held in Bodinaickanur, Periakulam and Uthamapalayam on Saturday to mark the birthday of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

In the first phase, surgery was performed to 119 patients and rest of them would be treated in the next phase, said Collector Rajesh Lakhoni.

Advocate murdered

TIRUNELVELI : The Sankarankovil police have arrested a woman for allegedly murdering her husband, an advocate.

MADURAI : The water level at Periyar dam stood at 124.10 feet with an inflow of 207 cusecs and a discharge of 1115 cusecs. The Vaigai dam level was at 57.12 feet with an inflow of 610 cusecs and a discharge of 800 cusecs.
