Letters to the Editor
One can only wonder at the ethics of doctors who went on strike for days together over the issue of reservation for OBCs in higher education. Thousands were exposed to the might of those who refused to treat them. How many of the agitating students secured their medical seat on merit? Did none of them get in through the management quota, minority quota, or recommendation? It was indeed sad to see photographs of some students in white coats, wielding broomsticks in their hands perhaps to drive home a point. Were they not ridiculing all those who labour hard to keep our surroundings clean? They would do well to remember that the medical profession is noble because there are numerous people around them who make their environment noble. But for them, hospital floors and bathrooms would not be clean.
Jose Mathew,
* * * It is the Government's responsibility to enforce social justice. Reservation in higher education is one of the many means to achieve this objective. Any one opposing it is anti-social. Nobody should be allowed to mobilise a few hundred people and create mob frenzy with a view to blackmailing society and government. Especially since the medical profession is neither prestigious nor luxurious. It is to be practised with compassion and sympathy.
M. Lazar,
* * * It is nobody's contention that OBCs should not be given opportunities for uplift. What is being resented is the use of reservation for vote bank politics.
G.M. Rama Rao,
* * * Anti-reservation activists are only asking for the exclusion of the creamy layer and a review of the reservation policy.
Narayanan Vaidyanathan,
