`Document State's contribution to science with historical perspectives'

Ravindra concerned over sidelining of natural sciences and humanities

  • Researchers must trace the roots of the term backward classes: Ravindra
  • `The concept of backward classes differs from society to society'

BANGALORE: Former Chief Secretary A. Ravindra has said that there is a need to document the State's contribution to the field of science with historical perspectives.

Dr. Ravindra was inaugurating a seminar on "Post-Independence research history of the State" organised by the Karnataka Ithihasa Academy here on Saturday. Details from the State's point of view on the contribution of scientists such as Sir C.V. Raman, Satish Dhawan, C.N.R. Rao and U.R. Rao, and institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Space Research Organisation and National Aeronautic Limited should be documented.

"There is a general talk that the country has not given importance to inculcate a sense of history among its people." Though it may not be true, there were some unfortunate developments in the field of education as traditional subjects such as natural sciences and humanities were being sidelined and importance was being given to subjects such as information technology. In the light of the reported imbalance in development of education and the general observation about the sense of history among the people, the country had been facing a challenging task in creating awareness about history despite the technological support it had, he said.

In the context of the issue of reservation, researchers should trace the roots of the term "backward classes" and the reason for the addition of "other" on a later date. The concept of "backward classes" would differ from society to society. A comprehensive, balanced and objective research on the subject would help the country in gaining a new insight into the social fabric, he said.

Scholar A. Sundar spoke about the objectives of the seminar.

President of Mythic Society MKLN Shastri presided over the function.
