THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tens of thousands of students are expected to step into the world of learning as schools in the State reopen for the new academic year on Monday.
Verification
The precise number of students who are added to the State's general education sector will, however, be known only after the `one-day verification' done by the Department of Education on the sixth working day of the new academic year. "After the one-day verification it will take some time for the consolidation of figures to be done. We expect to have the correct figure by, say, June 10," the Director of Public Instruction S. Shivshankar told The Hindu here on Sunday.
`Pravesanotsavom'
The newcomers to the schools will be welcomed with a `Pravesanotsavom,' literally a festival designed to rid tiny tots of their fear of schools. The State-wide inauguration of the festival will be done at Cotton Hill Government Girls' Higher Seconday School, Thiruvananthapuram, on Monday morning by Education Minister M.A. Baby. "The children who are coming for the first time to the schools will be welcomed by the senior students. At the main inaugural ceremony, they will be given a kit that contains pencils and crayons among other things. We have given instructions to each school in the State to organise the Pravesanotsavom," the State Project Director of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan K.M. Ramanandan said here on Sunday.
In more schools
This year the `Pravesanotsavom' will also be held at the block level in addition to the district-level festivals, a decision taken at the recent meeting between the Education Minister and representatives of teachers' organisations. Originally the schools were scheduled to reopen after the summer vacation on June 1. However, the onset of monsoon and the consequent heavy rain prompted the department to postpone the reopening date.
