KOZHIKODE: Decisions on continuation of members of the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC-K) in elected posts in local bodies will be taken only in consultation with the United Democratic Front (UDF). Views of the UDF will be a decisive input in this matter, party State vice-president P. Sankaran said after meetings of party leaders here on Sunday. The leadership of the party had earlier asked its members to resign by June 30 from posts of president and chairman of standing committees in local bodies to which they got elected with support of the Left Democratic Front, since its alliance with the ruling front had ceased to exist. They were free to continue as members. On Sunday, the party's general body meeting, attended by people's representatives and office-bearers here, followed by another meeting of party members in local bodies in the district discussed the issue. DIC(K) president K. Muraleedharan, M.P. Gangadharan, Sadiri Koya, K.P. Kunhikannan and Mr. Sankaran were among those who participated. A five-member committee was formed to take decisions regarding the stand the party should take in local bodies. The members of local bodies will consult the panel at the right time and take a decision. The meetings decided that they needed to resign only at the "appropriate time." This means that there will be no deadline for them to resign. Many party men had been saying in private that it was not advisable to resign, since it would deprive them of opportunities to strengthen relations with people at a time when the party had only one MLA. Mr. Sankaran said the UDF would be consulted before decisions to resign were taken since it was now a close ally of the DIC(K). The DIC(K) councillors in Kozhikode Corporation Council, except U.T. Rajan, attended the programme and were party to the decisions taken at today's meeting, Mr. Sankaran said. Mr. Rajan had already dissociated himself from the party leadership.
