MALAPPURAM: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has pepped up its State leadership by bringing in more veterans as well as young blood. More representation has been given to the party units from the central and southern districts.

Announcing the reconstituted leadership after a marathon meeting of the State working committee of the party, which lasted for three days and nights, party State president Syed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal said on Saturday midnight that Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed would be the new State general secretary.

Mr. Ahamed had been holding charge of the general secretary's post since P.K. Kunhalikutty stepped down following the party's rout in the recent Assembly elections.

Mr. Ahamed and Mr. Kunhalikutty have swapped their posts in the new committee — the latter has been made IUML treasurer. Mr. Shihab Thangal will continue as the chief of the party.

The party will have four vice-presidents, with the induction of two more veterans. They are: Syed Umer Bafaqi Thangal, Abdulla Haji Ahamed Sait, Hameed Ali Shamnad and P.P. Abdul Gafoor Moulavi.

Mr. Shamnad, a former Parliament member from Kasaragod, and Mr. Moulavi, a senior Mujahid leader from Pulikkal, are the new veteran faces in the committee.

The League has four secretaries to handle party affairs. They are T. Ahamed Kabeer, E.T. Mohammed Basheer, Abdussalam Haji, and M.K. Muneer. Mr. Basheer was a secretary in the previous leadership also.

Mr. Kabeer, an economics teacher from Maharaja's College, Kochi, and party general secretary in Ernakulam district, will be in charge of organisational affairs. Rated one of the intellectuals in the party, Mr. Kabeer will hold the key role as secretary in charge of organisational matters,

Mr. Basheer, a trade union leader who had been the Education Minister for two terms, will be in charge of labour issues.

Dr. Muneer, son of C.H. Mohammed Koya, former president of the State Muslim Youth League and former Minister, will be in charge of youth affairs within the party. This will be his first top position in the Muslim League's State committee.

Three members of the 91-member working committee did not attend the meeting, which took place at Peeyem Auditorium at Kottakkal. For the first time, the committee included 25 special invitees nominated by old-timers of the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre, the League's cultural forum in the Gulf.

A three-member `discipline council,' led by IUML Malappuram district president Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, will ensure restructuring of the party on the basis of membership. The other members of the discipline council are party's Kozhikode district general secretary P.K.K. Bava, and Mankada constituency president and former member of the Public Service Commission Kolathur T. Mohammed Moulavi.

The IUML has also formed a three-member `constitution council.' M. Ummer, MLA, is its convener. The other members are K. Alikoya from Kozhikode and K.M.A. Shukkoor from Idukki.
