Joseph's resignation sought

KOCHI: The Indian Federal Democratic Party (IFDP) has urged Minister for Public Works P.J. Joseph to quit over the Housing Board irregularities scandal. IFDP general secretary Khadar Kannur said Mr. Joseph should step down as Minister and face an investigation to prove his claim that his hands were clean. Mr. Khadar said a Left Democratic Front (LDF) MLA had also levelled the charge of irregularities in the Housing Board during Mr. Joseph's tenure as Minister in the previous LDF Government.

He also wanted the Chief Minister, who, according to Mr. Khadar, had promised that no corrupt Minister would be allowed to stay on in his Cabinet, should keep his word. — Special Correspondent

MLA opposes cut in quota for ITI

PALAKKAD: Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) secretary K.K. Divakaran, MLA, has opposed the decision of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) to cut the 30 per cent quota to the Indian Telephone Industry (ITI), a public sector company, on its orders. In a statement here on Sunday, he said the quota for its orders on telecommunication equipment was withdrawn under pressure from the U.S., which wanted to get these orders to companies in that country.

He said the decision would threaten the survival of the ITI units in Kanjikode in Palakkad and other States, such as Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.. — Staff Reporter

Pepper subsidy scheme extended

KOCHI: The Union Government has approved a proposal for extending the time limit for providing World Trade Organisation-compatible subsidy for pepper exports on the condition that the upper limit for the total quantity remains 20,000 tonnes. The scheme will close on reaching the targeted 20,000 tonnes of exports. The scheme to provide subsidy was earlier open till March 31. — Staff Reporter

Minister inaugurates church fete

PATHANAMTHITTA: Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas inaugurated the valedictory function of the yearlong centenary celebrations of the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church on the SC Seminary Hills that houses the headquarters of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, on Sunday. The celebrations began immediately after the Holy Communion in the forenoon.

Philipose Mar Chrysostum Mar Thoma Metropolitan presided over the function.— Staff Reporter

Kanchi seer visits Mulliyoor shrine

KOTTAYAM: Sankaracharya of the Kanchi-Kamakodi Math, Jayendra Saraswathy, on Sunday visited the Malliyoor Mahaganapathy Temple, near Kuruppanthara, here. The seer, who arrived here with a contingent of about 15 persons by 11 a.m., was received with `Poornakumbh' by Malliyoor Sankaran Namboodiri, accompanied by the trustees of the temple Parameswaran Namboodiri and Divakaran Namboodiri. He later offered `Aayiram Kudom Vazhipad.'

Woman killed in accident

KOTTAYAM: A 75 year old woman was killed when she was run over by a bus. According to the police, Kausalya of Kavumparambil House was alighting from a private bus at Nineth Mile on the K.K. Road, when the bus moved forward and she was crushed under its rear wheels.

Rejuvenation therapy for elephants

THRISSUR: The annual `Sukhachikitsa' (rejuvenation therapy) for the elephants belonging to the Guruvayur Devaswom will begin on July 1. During 30-day long session the elephants will be given both ayurvedic and allopathic medicines. — Staff Reporter
