ANANTAPUR: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy once again allayed fears of lack of water to Handri Neeva Sujala Sravanthi project on Sunday by stating that it was very much possible and practical. Explaining the issue at an impromptu press conference after laying foundation stone for the projecthe stated that Krishna delta, which was now depending mostly on Nagarjuna Sagar water, could be given Godavari water by constructing Polavaram project. About 3,000 tmc ft of Godavari water had been flowing waste into the sea every year, he noted. Thus, water saved in Krishna river could be utilised for projects like Handri Neeva and others by drawing water from Srisailam Reservoir for creating new irrigation potential in two south Telangana, two south Coastal and four Rayalaseema districts. On the exorbitant cost of Rs. 1.12 lakhs per acre for creating irrigation potential under Handri Neeva he said it was not high when compared to the woes of Rayalaseema people for centuries. The lift irrigation projects also required high cost for creating irrigation potential with an expenditure of Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 per acre, he explained. On the allocation of 10 tmcft water to Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir the Chief Minister said the total quantity could be given only with modernisation of Tungabhadra High Level Canal.
