NEW DELHI: Ravi Dayal, publisher and son-in-law of journalist Khushwant Singh, died in hospital here on Saturday. He is survived by his wife Mala and daughter Naina. Mr. Dayal (69) died within 24 hours of surgery for a cancerous growth in the lungs. The body was cremated on Sunday morning in the presence of family members and friends including writers, publishers, academicians and journalists. Soon after completing his Masters in History from Oxford University, Mr. Dayal joined the Oxford University Press. He worked as Editor in Mumbai and later headed its Chennai office. He also set up the OUP's office in Delhi. Mr. Dayal remained its Chief Executive Officer for many years. After retirement in 1987, he opened his own publishing company — Ravi Dayal Publishers — in the capital. His main contribution is towards academic publishing. Besides publishing books on Subaltern Studies (people's movement), Mr. Dayal worked with Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.
