Coimbatore: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is negotiating with a content delivery manager for offering e-learning or e-education through broadband with special focus on tuitions for students appearing for SSLC and HSLC examinations, said K. Sridhara, Chief General Manager (CGM), BSNL, Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle. He said that the service would be free of cost if opted for the Rs. 900 unlimited broadband package. The service would be made available four to five months before the students take their examinations. He was talking to reporters after participating in a function organised to present Bharat Sanchar Sarathy and Sanchar Seva Padak awards to five employees.
Location Based Services
Similarly, the BSNL would unveil a lot of content delivery and value added services in the next two to four months. One of them would be Location Based Services (LBS) wherein the mobile user while on travel could get information relating to facilities and services like doctor, workshop, theatres, hospitals, lodges, star hotels, etc. The Base Transmission Station would identify the location of the mobile user and offer him the location and phone number of the services and facilities available close to the area. The LBS would be based on a data bank of phone numbers and the service would be active in three to four months. A mobile user, while waiting at the airport or railway station, could use the LBS for ascertaining whether any of his friends in his "phone book contacts" were also in the same place and then meet them. Similarly, the "Push to Talk" group transmission service, replicating the wireless transmission used by uniformed service personnel, could be made available to BSNL phone users. They could just push a button and convey a message in the form of a transmission to a select group - closed user group, he said. Similarly, to help villagers in rural areas get over the linguistic barrier (lack of English literacy) in typing and sending Short Message Service (SMS), the BSNL would introduce "Talking SMS" in association with a content delivery manager on a revenue sharing basis. At present, 15.65 lakh people were using the cellular service of the BSNL and the network had spread to over 2,000 cell sites penetrating into 30 per cent of the villages after completing coverage in towns. The BSNL was expanding the cellular network by adding up five lakh connections. There were more than 198 cell sites in Coimbatore while more than 20 cell sites were coming up. Another 400 cell sites would be set up in the circle within the next two years to provide seamless coverage.
