MYSORE: As the country observes World Environment Day on Monday, it is pertinent to note that there is not enough awareness about many aspects of environment pollution, including noise pollution. M. Jayaram, Director of All-India Institute of Speech and Hearing, told The Hindu that unlike air, water, land/ soil pollution, noise pollution was not taken seriously in the country. "It appears that control of noise pollution continues to be the domain of Western countries. We seem to pay only lip service to the cause," he said. Studies on noise pollution levels and its impact on people conducted in Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata had revealed that it causes irritability, nausea, and hypertension, he said. "Noise pollution affects the cardio vascular, digestive, respiratory and reproductive systems. It also affects learning ability, especially among children. Noise pollution may also cause insomnia," he said. One of the imminent dangers of noise pollution was that its ill-effects were cumulative. Before one realised it, one's hearing capability would have diminished, he said.
