BANGALORE: The Congress on Sunday accused the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government of callousness in making timely payment of compensation to families of the eight persons killed in the violence that erupted during the funeral of actor Rajkumar on April 13.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who addressed a rally of party workers organised by the Bangalore city unit, said the outbreak of violence which had to be brought under control only by police firing, was proof of the failure of the H.D. Kumaraswamy-led Government in maintaining law and order.

Probe

The KPCC President demanded an investigation into the violence and the police firing by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), or an inquiry by a retired High Court judge, failing which the Congress would be forced to launch an agitation.

Mr. Kharge said the issue would be raised in the two-day special session beginning on Monday.

The session has been summoned to adopt the Bill to exclude certain posts which are deemed offices of profit to disqualify MLAs and MLCs.

Government attacked

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly and former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh remarked that the Government, which had given itself a deadline of one month to release the compensation to the families of those who died in the violence, had done nothing to realise the promise.

He warned that if the Government continued to delay paying compensation, the Congress would be left with no option but to launch an agitation.

Rally

The rally started as a march from Kanteerava Studios, where the samadhi of Rajkumar is located, and ended at the Mahatma Gandhi statue.

It was attended by the former Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Dinesh Gundu Rao, M.R. Sitaram and N.L. Narendra Babu, MLAs, and other leaders.
