National conference on heritage cities

MYSORE: A national conference on heritage cities will commence in Mysore on Monday. It will deliberate on issues pertaining to management of heritage cities.

According to a release from the Mysore City Corporation, the conference will be attended by representatives of the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, UNDP, UNESCO and INTACH, besides senior officials of the State and Union governments. The conference will be inaugurated by Secretary, Union Ministry for Urban Development, Anil Baijal.

Various aspects dealing with heritage cities would be discussed.

Among others participating in the national conference include O.P. Jain of INTACH, Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar, Mayor Bharati and Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar. — Staff Correspondent

MLAs seek more time to reply to notice

GULBARGA: The AIPJD MLAs who have been served show-cause notice by Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Krishna on the petition filed by the Janata Dal (S) Parliamentary Board chairman D. Manjunath seeking their disqualification from the House on the ground that they had indulged in anti-party activities during the zilla and taluk panchayat elections, have decided to seek an extension of time limit for replying to the notice from seven days to three months.

B.R. Patil, who is one among the eight MLAs who have been served the notice, told presspersons here on Sunday that the seven days time given by the Speaker was too short. — Special Correspondent

Complaints against institutions

BANGALORE: Deputy Commissioner of Bangalore Urban M.A. Sadiq has called upon the people to file complaints against financial institutions that have cheated them.

He said he would look into the complaints and file a report to the State Government.

Section 3 (1) of theKarnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Transactions Act empowers the district magistrate to investigate and report the "fraudulent transactions" of financial institutions.

In a press note, Mr. Sadiq said several institutions in Bangalore had cheated depositors. He would investigate the matter and submit a report to the State Government.

The complaints, with supporting documents, had to be filed by June 15. Those who had already filed complaints either with police or the Corps of Detectives need not file the complaints again, a press note said.

Woman dies of gastroenteritis

TUMKUR: A woman died of gastroenteritis at Kalasapura in Tumkur district on Saturday. While several villagers affected by the disease were treated at the Madhugiri Hospital, seven of them were brought to the Tumkur General Hospital.

An official of the Department of Health, who inspected the village, said the pipe supplying drinking water to the village was leaking at two points. Contamination of water may have caused the disease, he said.

He gave the name of the woman who died as Akkamma (52). — Staff Correspondent

Water woes: meet to be called soon

Kolar: The State Government is keen to solve the drinking water problem in Kolar district and a meeting of district legislators will be convened soon to discuss the issue, K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Surface Transport, has said.

The Union Minister was speaking at the zilla panchayat meeting here on Sunday. He said that the representatives of people had brought to the notice of the Chief Minister the drinking water situation in the district. The Chief Minister had assured that steps would be taken to release funds to solve the drinking water problem in the district, he said.

Waiver of tuition fee

Bidar: Girl students in professional colleges need not pay tuition fee to the Government from this academic year. The State Government has directed heads of all government professional colleges in this regard, said a release. — Staff Correspondent

List released

Bidar: The provisional selection list for admission to the Morarji Desai Residential School for students of backward classes in Bagadal, and school for minorities in Bambalagi, have been released. The list is available at the zilla panchayat, Deputy Commissioner's office, the District Backward Classes and Minorities Development office and the respective schools. Objections can be filed till June 6, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: S. Virupaksha has taken charge as the District Backward Classes and Minority Development officer in Bidar. He said people could approach him for information on government schemes on minority and backward welfare and in case of grievances. His office is at Basava Nagara Colony, BVB College Road, Bidar. Arrested

Raichur: The Raichur police on Saturday arrested Ananthamma from Jahirabad locality in the city and seized 12 kg chloral hydrate powder valued at Rs. 3,600 from her while she was selling it in the locality. She has been remanded in judicial custody. The police found that the accused had purchased the powder from Gadwal Khaleel and Ilger Mareppa. The police are searching for the two. The Netajinagar police have registered a case.

Held on charge of killing tiger

MYSORE: In a joint operation, Forest Department officials of Karnataka and Kerala have arrested three persons on the charge of killing a tiger and recovered from them a tiger skin.

Mohammed, Kutty and Kuttacha were arrested from D.B. Kuppe forest range of Nagarahole National Park.

MYSORE: Mysore Amateur Naturalists will screen two films on Monday on the occasion of World Environment Day. These include "Blue Planet," produced by Greame Ferguson, and "Food for Thought" filmed by David Attenborough, which will be screened at Vasudevacharya Bhavan, J.L.B. MYSORE: The Government CPC polytechnic has been designated nodal centre for admissions to first year diploma courses, according to a release. Interviews for admission will start on Monday. — Staff Correspondent

Screening camp to detect chikungunya

MYSORE: Mysore City Corporation (MCC) will on Monday conduct a re-survey of the families staying in Jyothinagar Police Quarters, where nearly 50 persons were taken ill on Saturday owing to suspected chikungunya.

Medicines will also be distributed. Sources said the medical screening camp had been organised to ensure that no case of chikungunya goes undetected.— Staff Correspondent

Film screening

MYSORE: The Mysore Amateur Naturalists (MAN) will be screening two films on nature on Monday as a part of World Environment Day. A release said "Blue Planet" produced by Greame Ferguson and filmed by astronauts of NASA depicts the earth from space. The other film is "Food for Thought" filmed by David Attenborough for the BBC . The films will be screened at Vasudevacharya Bhavan, J.L.B. Road from 6 p.m. — Staff Correspondent
