Introduction of new tax return form opposed

NEW DELHI: Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT), an apex body of trade associations and federations, has opposed the introduction of the new tax return form. In a statement issued here on Sunday, CAIT said: ``The Union Government's new four-page income tax return form is nothing but an exercise to handover the honest taxpayer into the hands of tax inspectors.'' CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal termed the income tax return form as a "vicious document''.

"On the one hand the Government advocates simplification and rationalisation of the tax structure, while on the other they replace the earlier tax return form with one that is complicated. The new four-page tax return form will require everyone to maintain account books that will not only encourage corruption but also wreck the confidence of an honest taxpayer over the tax system,'' he said.
