CHENNAI: The Orissa Handlooms and Handicrafts Fair at Srushti, Alwarpet is a delight for handicrafts lovers with its wide range of saris and dress materials and artefacts. Besides the cotton ikkat saris that have won national awards, the exhibition also has silk saris with Bombai, ikkat from Sambalpur, and tussar saris. In dress materials, it has sets embellished with mirror works, phulkari embroidery at nominal price. Home linen, artefacts in brass and terracotta and idols with banjara bidri work are also on display. Umbrellas, wall hangings and lampshades in applique work, a traditional craft of Orissa, add colour to the exhibition. Lacquer bangles from Cuttack, carved wooden articles from Puri and deities made from paddy should attract visitors. The exhibition also features items such as bronze icons, seashell crafts, bell metal articles and wooden toys. Neemwood carved products are priced between Rs.15 and Rs.18,000. The exhibition was organised to showcase the talent of women entrepreneurs of Orissa.
Discounts offered
A discount of 20 per cent on handlooms and 10 per cent on handicrafts would be offered at the exhibition, which is on till June 13 at Srushti, 86, Chamiers Road, Alwarpet.
