CHENNAI: In his first post-election interface with residents of the Mylapore constituency on Sunday, S. Ve. Shekher, MLA, wanted educated people committed to social service to participate in the coming Chennai Corporation election. Residents associations could nominate two or three representatives to meet the elected councillor and the MLA periodically to discuss complaints and suggestions, he suggested. Residents from Mylapore, Adyar and Mandavelipakkam attended Kalyana Nagar Association's meeting in Mandavelipakkam. Mr. Shekher is a member of the association. Residents complained of streetlights not working and recommended renaming the Norton Road as K.V. Jagannathan Road, building an eco-park near Ambedkar Mandapam, permission to perform rituals on the embankment of the Kapaleeswarar Temple tank. They also sought more MTC services through Mandavelipakkam and suggested imposition of a fine for indiscriminate garbage dumping.
In writing
Mr. Shekher urged them to give their complaints in writing so that he could take it up with the authorities. He said he would like to use the MLA fund of Rs. 1 crore to upgrade facilities in the constituency. In the past few weeks, Mr. Shekher supervised the burial of over 20 unclaimed bodies from Government Royapettah Hospital and the Government General Hospital. The residents could contribute their time and money in helping to bury the dead, who often turned out to be abandoned sick and elderly people, he said. Appreciating the efforts of `Serve the Dead', he said his trust, Sri Sugar Public Charitable Trust, was supporting the organisation's initiatives. He also appealed to the residents to support the cause of the vettiyans. He also sought the association's support in setting up an office until a regular office was established. Corporation officials from Zone 10 will meet on June 10 to discuss the problems of the residents, he said. Mr. Shekher can be reached at: mylaporemla@gmail.com or mlamylapore@gmail.com
