MANGALORE: The district Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan implementation committee has approved a Rs. 19.67-crore action plan for 2006-07. The plan, which has been divided into nine components, is aimed at implementing the Centrally funded Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. It strives to provide quality education to students in government and aided schools. The components provide for activities for children who have remained outside the formal education set up, as well as meets expenses on primary and higher primary schools, teachers, block and cluster resource centres, general and administrative expenses and civil constructions for resource augmentation. Funds for each of these components are need-based and allocated on priority. Conducting residential bridge courses for children who are outside the formal education set up, organising four-month residential schools for them with remedial teaching, setting up mobile schools and providing year-long bridge course and home-based education are strategies aimed at bringing such children into the ambit of formal education. While Rs. 63.05 lakh has been earmarked for the above component, the committee has agreed to set aside Rs. 23.94 lakh for the development of primary schools. This includes aid for government and aided schools as well as for procurement of learning aids for new schools. The committee has agreed to set up six new primary schools. Likewise, Rs. 16.64 lakh has been earmarked to provide aid for government and aided higher primary schools.
