Poor consolation

`Southern Spice', the most popular music channel from the South that provides a mix of all songs from the region, including Telugu, was taken away by the Hathway group from the TV channel menu and replaced by another religious channel based outside the country, which has few takers. A poor consolation. Already the Hathway network has axed the DD sports channel in spite of DD's directions.

Why is there no action on such incongruities? Southern Spice is a very popular channel with the student community and a heavy draw with the young generation. Then why the axe on such a channel? When one medium is enough to inform, educate and entertain, why so many religious channels from abroad, which show the same faces with repetition from channel to channel. Why not restore Southern Spice to provide entertainment. With the World Cup Football coming, why not resume the DD sports channel too? DD sports provides a great variety with sidelights which other channels do not provide.

Smoking in restaurants

Despite the ban on smoking in public places, smokers are a regular `feature' in most restaurants, the owners of which do not seem to take note of for fear of losing their valued customers. Mild non-smokers for fear of retaliation or abuse from smokers keep mum. The guardians of the law are a happy challan-issuing lot. In hotels too, some customers are found smoking and the hotel personnel seem to look the other way. Who would come to the non-smokers' rescue is a thousand-dollar question!

Irresponsible act

People migrating to the twin cities are not able to understand why two wheeler riders always overtake from the left, forgetting totally that people alighting from buses will definitely face a sudden shock or jolt. Unless two wheeler riders don't change their habits, it is better to manufacture all vehicles with left side steering and amend the MV Act for the twin cities' two wheeler riders. May god help the bus commuters and pedestrians of the twin cities.

Right of way

I request the Traffic Commissioner of Police to give proper instructions to all the traffic police personnel on the roads to ensure right of way for all vehicles in distress, for example ambulances and fire engines. It is a common sight in the twin cities of ambulances getting caught in the traffic and nobody bothering to let them go ahead. Given the fact that some Hyderabadis by and large lack traffic or civic sense, I request the Traffic Police Commissioner to ensure that the traffic police take a proactive role on the roads and clear the way for ambulances caught in the traffic and help save precious lives.

Eye-opener

The report on road accidents ( The Hindu , May 17) should serve as an eye-opener to elders. The writer has confined himself to the outer roads and newly laid highway track ways, which are mostly laneless.

If one goes around the three cities of Hyderabad, Secunderabad and the newly formed Cyberabad, the roads within the twin cities are comparatively narrow even though the authorities are making all efforts to widen them with too many constraints like people objecting to the demolition of some places like religious spots right in the middle of the widened roads and the like.
