TIRUCHI: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will screen a film on emerging career prospects in the profession in schools to attract young minds in large numbers, T.N. Manoharan, president, ICAI, has said.

Addressing a workshop on Fringe Benefit Tax and Service Tax, organised by the Tiruchi Branch of ICAI's Southern India Regional Council, Mr. Manoharan said the film would sensitise teachers, students and parents to the importance of the profession. There would also be power point presentations.

While the marketing of CA course would be aggressive, there would be no compromise on quality. The best of old and new would comprise new syllabi for the CA course.

The ICAI might launch the new syllabi by August and the entrance test during November would be based on it, he said, adding that the duration of the course was condensed to four years with a blend of theory of practice.

The pass percentage in CA had increased phenomenally over the years, he said, informing that 83 per cent of the 7,445 candidates who passed out in 2005 were absorbed by industries. Out of a total number of 1.3 lakh CA professionals, 10,000 were settled abroad. Of the rest, 55,000 were employed in industries, and the rest were practitioners. There was a requirement of 40,000 more CA professionals in the country.

The ICAI had prevailed upon the Centre to restore the service tax exemption for CA professionals in the areas of auditing, accounting, and certification. He said that starting July the ICAI journal would be made attractive with components in auditing, direct and indirect taxes, professional opportunities, members abroad and economic indicators.

G. Ramasamy, Central Council Member, M. Kandasami, Chairman, Southern India Regional Council, ICAI, Chennai, and V. Alagappan, Chairman, Tiruchi Branch, SIRC-ICAI, offered felicitations.
