VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Keshava Rao has urged party leaders to recognise the importance of cadre and ordinary workers of the party in their victory. He asked cadre to go to people and explain the achievements of the Government in the last two years. Addressing the party's mini plenary organised by the Krishna District Congress Committee and Vijayawada City Congress Committee here on Sunday, the PCC president asked party leaders to give complete freedom to local representatives in selection of candidates for the elections. "I am ready to blindly follow the party workers," he said amidst loud applause.
Party base
The party workers should, in turn, chalk out an action plan for the next three years to strengthen the party base. Mr. Rao described the cadre as charioteers of the Congress vehicle. "Party leaders should stop attributing their success to higher-ups and try to recognise the role of party workers in their victory," he advised. Rebutting media reports on dissidence in the party, Mr. Rao said they were only differences of opinion as the party strongly believed in democracy and gave every individual a chance to air his or her views. The PCC president said Congress leaders had accepted posts as `responsibilities' and the party policies were formulated based on interaction the leaders had with common people. "Though we do not have a magic wand to bring about sweeping changes overnight, we do have the sincerity and commitment to fulfil the promises made in the run up to elections," he noted.
Vilification
The PCC president asserted that the Congress had proved the TDP's vilification campaign wrong by making free power supply to farmers a reality. Mr. Rao agreed with the need to decentralise power upto the village panchayat level, lest poverty and backwardness would continue to stalk rural parts. After three years, every individual in villages across the State should have a house to live in; every house should have a tap connection and power supply; every village should have a school; and every cluster of villages should have a primary health centre.
