Theft of 40 lakh: two arrested

HYDERABAD: The sight of a staggering 40 lakh rupees, crisp notes bundled into several bags, was a shocking sight for the young duo from Rajahmundry. So much so, they fled leaving the bounty behind!

M. Sivarama Krishna who was arrested at Secunderabad station on Sunday along with his associate Ambati Devi Madhu, in connection with the Rs. 40 lakh burglary from a penthouse in a Srinagar Colony flat, said the moment they opened the bags at Everest lodge in Secunderabad, "we were scared, we never expected such a huge amount in the bag. I was shocked and scared too," he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Shika Goel said Krishna gained entry into Sathyavathi's house along with Madhu as he was working as a security guard in the same apartment since March 1. Krishna earlier had stolen Rs. 5,000 from her house in April.

Krishna again hatched a plan to steal money from the same house and asked his childhood friend Madhu, an electrician, to assist him in the job. On May 30, the duo entered the apartment by scaling the boundary wall, climbed the staircase and reached the penthouse where Sathyavathi was staying.

Krishna then opened the bolt of the main door by putting his hands through the window and entered the house only to find cash in two bags. After stealing them, Krishna and Madhu slept in a garden on the apartment premises till 4.30 a.m. on May 31 and came to Everest lodge in an autorickshaw, Ms. Goel said.
