Government urged to complete city development projects

Staff Reporter

DCC president alleges moves to scuttle projects

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government should take concerted efforts to complete the capital region development projects initiated by the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government, District Congress Committee president K. Mohan Kumar has said.

Mr. Mohan Kumar, in a statement here on Sunday, cautioned the Government against vested interests which were trying to scuttle the development ventures kicked off by the UDF Government.

He said the engineering hangar proposed by Air-India at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and the decision to accord All India Institute of Medical Sciences status to the Medical College were two aspects which were expected to increase the development prospects of the capital city. The moves to scuttle these proposals would have a bearing on the development initiatives, he said.

The former Government had agreed to provide 15 acres of land for the engineering hangar. The land owned by the Trivandrum Rubber Works was proposed to be used for setting up the hangar. The Government should hand over the land at the earliest, he said.

Mr. Mohan Kumar alleged that vested interests were striving hard to deprive the Medical College of the privilege of the AIIMS status. On getting the status, the college would get substantial Central assistance for modernisation and improving research and development. The Government should go ahead with the move to get the Central assistance, he said.

The victims of the havoc wreaked by the monsoon were yet to get relief. The Government should take steps to provide the relief at the earliest, the DCC chief said.

Cut in transport schedules was causing difficulties to the public. The KSRTC should immediately resume the schedules to avert inconvenience to the public, Mr. Mohan Kumar said.

General body

The general body meeting of the DCC would be held at Bhagyamala Auditorium at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium on Tuesday morning.

Congress Working Committee member A.K. Antony, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala would attend the meeting., the DCC chief said.

KPCC members from the district and block and mandalam presidents, district office-bearers of feeder organisations, district panchayat members, grama panchayat presidents and corporation councillors would also attend the meeting, Mr. Mohan Kumar said.
