MADURAI: The State Government was urged to implement the Common University Act to bring uniformity in administration of various universities in the State and make them follow procedures that give equal representation to different sections in the decision-making bodies. A resolution to this effect was passed at the special general council meeting of the Madurai Kamaraj University Colleges Managements Association held here on Sunday in which representatives of college managements and principals put forth their views on issues concerning higher education. Addressing the members, R. Lakshmipathy, association president and G. Thiruvasagam, executive secretary, pointed out that though the draft bill of the Common University Act had already been prepared, it was yet to get approval from the Government. The Act gives provision for representation to college managements also in university Syndicates, which is not the case now. They said with each university adopting different standards, it was time the new State Government gave its concurrence for the Act to bring commonality in the functioning of all universities.
MKU situation
According to them, the need for such an Act becomes important, particularly in the context of Madurai Kamaraj University, where "there is no balanced representation for all sections in the three vital bodies Syndicate, Senate and Academic Council." Dr. Lakshmipathy said the representation for college principals, university faculty and college teachers should be balanced and only an equal participation would enable taking right decisions. Later, briefing presspersons about the resolution and the Act, Dr. Thiruvasagam said there were problems of majority and minority representation at the MKU and if higher education/college issues had to get due attention, the present mode of representation must be changed. Urging the State Government to give a green signal to the Act, he said the domination of university professors in the Syndicate of MKU was leading to many important issues missing the attention and decision. "Without equal representation to principals and colleges, the issues get sidelined, ignored or rejected. Hence, the Common University Act is an urgent requirement," he said and sought the cooperation of all principals and managements in this regard.
