KOCHI: Tens of thousands of school children are all set to begin their journey to the world of letters on Monday. Though the schools were originally scheduled to reopen on June 1, the Government postponed it to June 5 considering the fury of the monsoon showers. According to a rough estimate, more than 10,000 students have been enrolled in first standard in the 99 Government schools in the district. "The schools have got sufficient time to complete the preparations for welcoming students. All the arrangements have been completed for the new academic year," said Baby Usha Kiran, District Education Officer. The classes and school premises will wear a festive look with festoons and balloons. Some schools have even roped in young cine actors to welcome students. People dressed up as cartoon characters and animals will also be there at the school gates to greet children. The district-level inauguration of Pravesanotsavam - a festival for formally welcoming students - will be held at Government Girls' High School, Ernakulam. An atmosphere conducive for children will be there at the schools. There will be songs and games and sweets will be distributed to them, said Ms. Kiran. "For schools in the coastal belt, special caution for ensuring the safety of students has been sounded," she said. On the first day itself, students will be told to keep away from water bodies.
