Five arrested, weapons recovered

KOCHI: Five persons were arrested by the police and weapons recovered from them. The arrests were made during combing operations as part of the increased surveillance during monsoon.

Those arrested are George Joseph, also known as Lijo, 22, Roy, 25, Sanoop, 19, Girish, 24, all from Thutiyoor and Saju, 20, of Palachuvadu.

They were arrested near the Varappuzha Bridge on Saturday evening. Weapons, packet of chilly powder and masks were recovered.

Vehicles coming from and going towards rural areas will be checked as part of the drive, the police said.

Three arrested

Three persons were arrested by the Ernakulam Town Central Police on charges of recruiting people for jobs abroad without proper licence.

Those arrested were Radhakrishna Panicker, 37, his wife Smitha Radhakrishnan, 28, of Mavelikkara and Thomas, 40, of Ettumanoor.

The accused had hired a room near TD Temple here and were conducting interviews.

The accused also collected amounts ranging between Rs.25,000 and Rs.50,000 from those who attended the interview, the police said.

The arrests were made following complaints from applicants.
