A treat for wild life lovers

NEW DELHI: Wildlife lovers and conservationists will be treated to exciting and thought-provoking films on the subjects close to their heart on World Environment Day today.

The films will brought to them by TV channel Animal Planet throughout the day.

Why are so many plants and animals changing their age-old habits? Why are the sandhill cranes migrating from their temperate zones later than normal and returning earlier than expected? Why have the golden toad of Monteverdi and other species disappeared from the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica?

To answers these questions and show viewers how they can contribute towards the cause of environment conservation, Animal Planet will present twelve engaging programmes from 12 noon to 12 midnight, a spokesperson of the channel here said.

Two dead in roof collapse

NEW DELHI: Two persons died and three others were injured when the roof of a godown collapsed at Mangolpuri in the Capital on Sunday, police said.

Construction work was going on in the building situated in the marble market in Mangolpuri when the roof collpsed suddenly, resulting in the death of two unknown labourers, police said adding the three injured have been admitted to Sanjay Gandhi hospital.

A case has been registered in connection with the incident.

Photo exhibition on Buddha's life

NEW DELHI: A month-long exhibition titled ``On the Path to Maha-Parinirvana: In the Footsteps of Lord Buddha'' opened in the National Museum on Saturday to commemorate the 2550th year of ``Mahaparinirvana'' of Gautama Buddha.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Dr A K V S Reddy, Director General, National Museum said this exhibition is a part of the year-long celebrations launched by Prime Minister Mammohan Singh on May 13 at Vigyan Bhawan here.

``It is an extended version of a small exhibition we held at the Vigyan Bhawan,'' Dr Reddy said. He revealed that plans are on to organise mobile exhibitions after finalising the details with Tourism Minister Ambika Soni on June 6.

Safdarjung rape accused gets bail

NEW DELHI: The main accused in the rape of a 30-year-old woman in Safdarjung Hospital last year was on Saturday granted bail by a Delhi court as the victim had failed to identify him.

Additional Sessions Judge S P Garg enlarged Sanjay alias Sonu on bail on a personal bond and surety of Rs.10,000 admitting a defence plea that the victim had not identified him and the DNA samples of the prosecutrix did not match with his.

DDA graft case

NEW DELHI: Fourteen years after the CBI chargesheeted two senior DDA officials in a Rs.3,000 graft case, a special court has finally agreed to give the long pending case a go-ahead.

According to CBI, executive engineer S K Mittal and assistant engineer Dharam Singh, both with the civic body, were caught red-handed on February 5, 1991 taking Rs.3,000 from a Government contractor in return for passing some of the latter's pending bills.

Both officials were on February 4, 1992 chargesheeted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
