Former Tourism Minister Pita Nacuva was elected as the new Speaker of Fiji's Parliament on Monday. According to the local news service The Fijilive, Mr. Nacuva was elected unopposed by the MPs who were sworn in on Monday morning. He succeeds Ratu Epeli Nailatikau whose term ended last week. Mr. Nacuva contested for the Prime Minister's seat in the general election last month but lost to the Fiji Labour Party's Monica Raghwan. He was nominated for the Speaker's post by Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase's SDL party and was supported by the Labour Party and the Opposition United People's Party.
