Justice Sachar panel's term extended

Special Correspondent

Centre gives time until October 31, 2006

NEW DELHI: The Central Government on Monday extended the term of the Justice Rajindar Sachar Committee entrusted with the task of preparing a comprehensive report on the social, economic and educational status of Muslims in the country. The Committee, set up in March 2005, has been given time till October 31, 2006.

The term of the seven-member Committee — which ran into a spot of trouble earlier this year over reports that it had sought details on the number of Muslims in the Indian Army — was slated to expire on June 8.
