Second phase of Pondicherry civic elections from June 27

To cover Pondicherry, Oulgaret municipal councils and Villianoor commune panchayat

Pondicherry: The State Election Commission (SEC) will issue notifications on Wednesday setting in motion the second phase of civic polls scheduled for June 27, which will cover the municipalities of Pondicherry, Oulgaret and of the Villianoor commune panchayat here.

The first phase of polls has been fixed for June 24 and will cover the municipalities of Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and also of all the five communes and the village panchayats in Karaikal district.

Mahe and Yanam do not have commune panchayats.

Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipal councils would have one Chairman each (as the councils in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam) besides 42 and 37 Councillors respectively. The election of both the Chairman and of the councillors would be on party basis.

The chairman posts in Pondicherry and Karaikal municipal councils are reserved for women (general) while in Mahe and Oulgaret councils the chairman posts come under general category. The post in Yanam municipal council has been reserved for Scheduled castes.

The election of the members of the commune panchayats alone would be on party basis and the election of the village panchayat president and ward members would be on non-party basis.

The last date to file nominations for the first phase of poll is June 10 and for the second phase of election is June 14.

Political parties are yet to gear up for polls.

The third phase of poll covering the remaining four commune panchayats in Pondicherry district is scheduled for July 1.
