Telgi's confession: court order conveyed to Magistrate

Trial has begun in case registered at Peenya police station

BANGALORE: The order of the special court, which is trying cases related to the multi-crore stamp paper racket, permitting prime accused Abdul Kareem Telgi to make a confessional statement was communicated to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on Monday. The Magistrate posted the matter to Wednesday.

It was on May 26 that the special court allowed Telgi, who is lodged in Yerwada Central Prison in Pune, to make a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate here, through teleconferencing. He was permitted to make a confessional statement on those cases in Karnataka in which charge sheets have not been filed.

Yerwada Central Prison authorities were informed of the May 26 order on Monday.

The special court on Monday began trial in the case registered at Peenya police station. Telgi and three other accused have been charged with forging documents such as chalan receipt of the Reserve Bank of India and embossing the bank's seal on the sale deed pertaining to Sami Labs of Peenya Industrial Estate.

The accused were charged of cheating the State and the Sami Labs of Rs. 42.75 lakh in May 1999.

The court examined two witnesses, including the complainant.
