Deep rooted in the hearts of environmentalists

When the huge sunflower tree that served as a landmark at the Mananchira was axed, the hearts of environmentalists sank. However, Mayor M. Bhaskaran's announcement that two saplings would be planted in the place of the felled tree has brought cheers to the tree lovers. The Mayor said that the decision was taken on a request by the environmentalists themselves. Mr. Bhaskaran made the announcement at a function organised to observe the World Environment Day on Monday The giant tree was so deep-rooted in the hearts of people and the soil that it took several days to fell it. Old-timers say that the tree was more than 75 years old.

All those who visited the city would have noticed the tree for the sprawling shade that it used to provide. It used to be a perfect overhead cover for wayside traders and motorists who used to park their vehicles beneath it.
