Votary of communication skills

Are our political leaders losing their communication skills? Sukumar Azhikode, critic, certainly believes so. Leaders of the Independence movement such as Gandhiji, Jawaharlal Nehru and many others as well as their communicative gifts are the touchstone that he uses to compare.

Inaugurating a workshop on education here recently, Prof. Azhikode spelt out what he believed were good examples of bad communication skills. One might be using a good analogy, for instance, but in a wrong context, it would leave a bad taste, he said referring to a reported use an analogy by a CPI(M) leader during a discussion in the party. One had to refine one's thoughts before it was expressed, he said adding that the communicative instruments of the present political leaders were not as sharp as those of great leaders of the past. True education alone could ensure the skills they badly need, he observed.
