TRIUMPH OF LABOUR: Girls at the Corporation higher secondary school, Perambur exult after the SSLC results were released on Monday.

CHENNAI: The overall pass percentage of students of Chennai Corporation schools has improved by a whopping 12 percentage points in this year's SSLC examinations compared to 2005. Of the 8,718 students of the Corporation schools who appeared for the examinations, 77 per cent have passed. Last year, this percentage was 65.1.

"The reason for this advancement is the regular training sessions we had for Corporation school teachers," says S. Uma, educational officer, Chennai Corporation.

She said that teachers who had produced good results in their schools earlier were chosen as resource persons to guide other teachers.

Review meetings with headmistresses were periodically held. Also, slices of bread were given to students of classes 10 and 12 for nutrition and as encouragement to attend special evening classes in January, February and March.

Girls have done better than boys.

The pass percentage among girls is 81.6 per cent and that of boys 70.8 per cent.

Interestingly, the number of Corporation school girl students who appeared for the SSLC examinations is more than that of boys. Around 5,000 girls took the tests while the number of boys was 3,705.

Corporation Higher Secondary School, Koyambedu and Corporation High School, Wall Tax Road, have secured 100 per cent pass results.

Another nine schools of the 65 Corporation schools have secured more than 90 per cent pass results.

The top three rank-holders of Corporation schools are: M. Gowri (476/500) of Corporation Higher Secondary School, Market Street; P. Jayakumar (475) of Corporation Higher Secondary School, Thiruvanmiyur and M. Kalpana (471) of Corporation Higher Secondary School, M.H.Road.
