Centre urged to send MPs team to Sri Lanka

CHENNAI: The Coordination Committee of Supporters of Tamil Eelam on Tuesday urged the Centre to send a Members of Parliament delegation belonging to different parties to Sri Lanka to assess the situation in the Tamil areas, besides consoling the affected Tamils in the island nation.

In a statement here, coordinator P. Nedumaran said a delegation of the Sri Lankan Tamil MPs should be allowed to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Demonstrations would be held in Chennai and all other district headquarters on June 12 to highlight the two demands. — Special Correspondent

Naresh Gupta holds talks with Collectors

MADURAI: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta held discussions with Collectors of nine southern districts here on Tuesday. According to official sources, Mr. Gupta reviewed the progress made in the Electors' Photo Identity Cards coverage. Joint Chief Electoral Officers P. Senthil Kumar and Pragadha were present.

The Collectors, S.S. Jawahar (Virudhunagar), T. Udhaychandran (Madurai), R. Vasuki (Dindigul), G. Prakash (Tirunelveli), Sunil Paliwal (Kanyakumari), R. Palaniyandi (Tuticorin), M.A. Siddique (Sivaganga), K.S. Muthusamy (Ramanathapuram) and Rajesh Lakhoni (Theni) took part, the sources said. — Staff Reporter

Indonesian Consulate in Chennai

CHENNAI: The Republic of Indonesia on Monday opened here its third Honorary Consulate in India, after Mumbai and Kolkata.

Addressing reporters after inaugurating the Consulate, Donnilo Anwar, envoy of Indonesia, invited industrialists and businessmen from south India to explore opportunities in Indonesia. Denying that the recent earthquake and volcanic activity had affected tourism, Mr. Anwar said trade ties between the two countries were showing an upward trend. At present, the volume is to the tune of $3.8 billion.

Last year, over 12,000 Indian tourists visited Indonesia. There was a huge potential to increase this. Opening of the consulate will attract more visitors from south India, because Indonesia had a sizeable population of migrant Tamils.

Industrialist K.J. Kumar, who has been appointed Honorary Consul of Indonesia here, said he would function as a bridge between Indonesia and South India. "My job is to contact businessmen from both sides and ensure growth of trade and business volume." — Special Correspondent

Free computer courses for poor

CHENNAI: Nandini Voice for the Deprived is running six free computer schools for the benefit of the deprived students in Tamil Nadu. Dindigul, Perungudi, Korattur, Nagercoil, Perambalur and Tiruvottiyur are the centres. The facilities in these schools have been expanded and the intake levels increased.

According to N.S. Venkataraman, Trustee, free computer education is provided to the students (boys and girls) to those in the lower income group to facilitate them to take up jobs as data entry operators. Placement services are also provided.

The students should have passed Plus-Two examination and the monthly income of the family should be less than Rs. 3,000.

Toppers honoured

ERODE: Students should set a target of their own, and achieve it through hard work, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan. Honouring SSLC, Matriculation and Plus Two district toppers here on Tuesday, he said that, for the first time, students from the district obtained the first three places in the SSLC examination. Lauding the teachers, he urged them to strive hard to produce more first rank holders in all subjects in the coming years.

The Collector distributed shields to first three toppers in the SSLC (State Board) examination. He also distributed prizes to toppers in all subjects in SSLC, Matriculation and Plus Two examinations. He also honoured the Chief Educational Officer, P. Kuppusamy, and the District Educational Officers, Shanmugavadivu and Pothirajan. - Staff Reporter

Jewels snatched

ERODE: Ten sovereigns of jewels were snatched from a woman here on Tuesday. According to the police, Renukadevi (35), wife of Muthukumar of Sengodampalayam, here was walking along the BVB Road near K.A.S. Nagar, when an unidentified motorist snatched the jewels.

In another case, Sakthivel Murugan of Iytriya Nagar, a suburb here complained to the Erode Taluk police that gold jewels and wristwatches in a bag were stolen from his house the same day. - Staff Reporter

`Improve skill'

ERODE: "Every student should develop his/her communication skills and documentation, testing in software developments," said the Managing Director, Nextgen Communications, New Delhi, J. Balamurugan.

Delivering the valedictory address on the 15-day AICTE-sponsored Staff Development Programme, `Computer Network Routing and communication systems,' by the Computer Technology Department of Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, on Tuesday, he stressed the importance of technology in the real life scenario. He distributed certificates to participants. The principal, A.M. Natarajan, presided.

The programme was inaugurated on May 22, and several eminent professors and lecturers delivered informative lectures.

Driver held

ERODE: Driver of a tanker lorry, Adaikalam, was arrested here on Tuesday for a road accident, in which a schoolgirl and an old man were killed. According to the police, Gomathy (16) of Lakshminagar, Bhavani, along with two other schoolmates were returning home after seeing the result in the Bhavani Government Girls HSS, when they were hit by a tanker lorry and killed on the spot. The lorry also hit an old man, who died on his way to the hospital. Two other students, Latha and Alamelu, who sustained injuries are undergoing treatment at the Government hospital.

ERODE: Under the Education for All scheme, the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Monday launched an intensive campaign on admission of children in schools in Erode. He also inaugurated a propaganda van. He urged the parents to admit their children in school, and asked officials to take steps to prevent dropouts in schools.

The propaganda van would visit five villages in a panchayat union, and stress the importance of education. He stressed the need for eradication of child labour. The Chief Educational Officer, P. Kuppusamy, the Primary School Education Officer, Mallika, and the District Education Officer, Shanmugavadivu, spoke.

Man kills wife, self

TIRUCHI: A 23-year-old woman, Parameswari, was murdered allegedly by her husband in their house at Appathurai on the Tiruchi-Lalgudi road on Monday. After allegedly committing the crime, Parameswari's husband, Kumaresan, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself. The couple were married only one and half years ago.

According to the police, Kumaresan allegedly attacked his wife, with whom he used to quarrel, with an `aruval'. Family quarrel is said to be the cause behind the crime. The Samayapuram police are investigating.

Three injured as bus hits car

TIRUCHI: Three persons on board a car including its driver sustained injuries when a State Transport Corporation bus dashed against the vehicle at Sevanthanpatti near Thuvarankurichi in the district on Sunday.

The occupants of the car — Sudhakar, car driver, Victor Seeni and Karuppusamy — who were injured, were admitted to a private hospital in the city.

The bus driver Shanmugam was later arrested.

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 114.19 feet on Tuesday.

Two killed in accident

Nagercoil: Two persons were killed in a road accident on Tuesday. According to police, Jebarsan of Putheri near Nagercoil and his friend Babu were returning to Nagercoil after visiting Kanyakumari in a car, when the car dashed against an electric post.

Girls commit suicide

Nagercoil: Two girls on Tuesday committed suicide in different parts of the district for their failure in SSLC examinations.

Subashini, daughter of Ponmurughan of Kottaram, and Manimekalai (15), daughter of Velmurughan of Vellamadam took this extreme step.

Dies in accident

Nagercoil: A newly married man was killed in a road accident on Tuesday.

Raja, a motor mechanic of Parakkai near Suchindrum, was returning to his house in a motorbike, when he lost control over the vehicle and dashed against an electric post.
