Skewed priorities

The coverage of Rahul Mahajan's case by the media, particularly television, is really shocking. If Rahul is indeed guilty of the charges on which he has been arrested, the law will deal with him. Is it necessary for the media to cover the episode to the exclusion of all other happenings that require attention? Such skewed priorities diminish media credibility.

It is appalling to see the media using the Mahajan affair to project themselves as super detectives and protectors of justice. Apparently they find creating sensation easier than educating the viewers. One hopes they get fed up of their own footage soon.

There seems to be no limit to `breaking' news. Is it necessary to subject the entire nation to every small detail of the Mahajan saga? First it was the shooting of Pramod Mahajan by his brother; now it is his son's hospitalisation due to alleged overdose of drugs and alcohol. Are the news channels and newspapers so starved for news that they should put on display a family's misfortune, which should ideally remain private?

If Rahul indeed did drugs, he was wrong. But by pre-judging him, the media have ensured that his life is trashed for good.

Sreelata Menon,
New Delhi
