Letters to the Editor
The imminent hike in the prices of petrol and diesel has come after some delay, thanks to the effective intervention of the Left. But anyone who is aware of the unprecedented rise of global petroleum prices will agree that the Government had no choice. Globalisation has led to business organisations growing richer and the poor sections becoming poorer. This calls for different scales and parameters in determining the selling price of oil. The price of petrol and diesel should be lower for public transport and such private transport systems that are largely used by the lower income group.
George Mathai,
* * * The steep hike in the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs.4 and Rs.2 a litre is unjustified and arbitrary. The Centre should have taken cognisance of the note circulated by the Left parties suggesting alternatives. The hike will have a cascading effect on the prices of essential commodities.
J. Jayashankar,
