Kannur
Staff Reporter
KANNUR: K.C. Joseph, MLA, has accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government of attempts to drive a political wedge in the police force. In a statement here, Mr. Joseph urged Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan to refrain from the ongoing moves to collectively transfer police personnel suspected of having sympathy with the United Democratic Front (UDF). He said that the police personnel were being extensively transferred in violation of the Home Minister's public announcement that no one in the Police Department would be arbitrarily transferred. The transfer of 431 police personnel in Kannur and 145 in Kasaragod in addition to the transfer of many ministerial staff in the department including women was under the instruction of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s branch in the police and with the full knowledge of Mr. Balakrishnan, he said.
Criterion needed
Stating that nobody was against transfers per se, Mr. Joseph said that collective transfers of the personnel without applying any criterion would only create division in the force. This would only weaken the morale of the police, he added.
