Staff Reporter

Treatment plant to be established in three months

KANNUR: The dispute between the Kannur Municipality and a local action committee over the issue of disposal of waste from the municipal area at the former's garbage dumping ground at Chelora in the Chelora panchayat here ended on Tuesday. The suspended disposal of waste dumping ground will be revived.

The issue that led to the suspension of garbage disposal for nearly a week was settled at a meeting held in the presence of Kannur MLA K. Sudhakaran here on Tuesday.

Deadlock

The deadlock following the local action committee's objection to garbage disposal at Chelora ended when the municipal authorities assured the meeting that a garbage treatment plant will be established in three months. Till then, the existing system of garbage disposal at the ground will continue.

It was also agreed at the meeting that the municipality would dig a deep pit at the ground for dumping the waste.

Plastic disposal

Disposal of plastic wastes and animal wastes from slaughterhouses will be avoided as much as possible.

The municipality will take the initiative to dig a groundwater well in the area to address shortage of drinking water being experienced by inhabitants living near the ground.

The Health Inspector of the municipality will ensure that hospital wastes were not being brought to Chelora.

Additional District Magistrate Gopalakrishna Bhatt presided over the meeting. Municipal chairman K. Upendran, Edakkad Block Panchayat president Nelliyadan Raghavan, Chelora panchayat president V.K. Prakashini and action committee office-bearers Chalodan Rajeen, K. Pradeepan and K.K. Madhusoodhanan were also present at the meeting.

Burning issue

The 26-acre garbage dumping ground of the municipality at Chelora has been a burning issue for the local people.

Action committee members had stopped the garbage truck of the municipality near the dumping ground on Monday.

They demanded segregation of plastic wastes and covering the disposed waste with soil.
