GULBARGA: The former Minister and senior Congress leader Qamar-ul-Islam and Dr. Ambedkar Horata Samiti president S.G. Bharathi on Tuesday urged the State Government to take steps to give ownership rights to all slum dwellers whose houses were repaired and renovated under the Nirmala Jyothi and Valmiki housing schemes. Mr. Islam and Mr. Bharathi told presspersons here that the S.M. Krishna Government had taken a decision to improve the slums and renovate the houses under the two schemes with assistance provided by the Centre and the State Government. The work was to be completed in three phases by 2005. Mr. Islam, who was the Housing Minister in the S.M. Krishna Ministry, said the law was amended at that time to remove the lacunae to give ownership rights to all slum dwellers whose houses were renovated and repaired under the two schemes. He said although the project was to be completed by 2005, the second phase of the project was taken up now but the allocation had been reduced. Although the first phase of the work had been completed, the Government was yet to give ownership rights to the beneficiaries. Demanding ownership right to slum dwellers, Mr. Islam said he would lead a procession of slum dwellers led by Ambedkar Horata Samiti on June 15 and submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
