CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday flayed the hike in the price of petrol and diesel. In a statement here, he said, "the hike will induce further inflation and demand for neutralising wage increases and rise in freight and travel costs." Dubbing it a "reckless and wanton hike," he said the United Progressive Alliance Government's claim that the prices had to be raised to compensate for rise in international prices of crude oil was "spurious." The cost of petrol in China was only Rs.18.73 a litre. In fact the ex-refinery cost of petrol in India was only Rs.18.10 a litre and diesel Rs.19.75 a litre. "The current retail prices are all padded up by levies of excise, additional excise, education cess, Sales Tax etc," Dr. Swamy said.
