Guwahati: Noted Assamese writer Indira Goswami, the chief coordinator between the People's Consultative Group (PCG) formed by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Centre, is scheduled to meet Chief Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan on Wednesday and convey to him the group's concern over non-release of jailed ULFA leaders and slowing down of the ongoing peace process. Ms. Goswami would be accompanied by co-coordinator of the group Rebati Phukan to the Prime Minister's Office. The PCG at its meeting here on Monday decided to mount pressure on the Assam government for the release of jailed ULFA leaders and on the Centre to expedite the peace process. In a statement, the group said that though Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced immediately after assuming office for a second term to release the jailed ULFA leaders, the State government was yet to implement it and release the five central executive committee members of the militant outfit currently lodged in jail. Mr. Gogoi is currently on a tour to three nations Canada, the United Kingdom and Italy leading an Indian delegation of Finance Ministers of different States to get a feel of the implementation of the value added tax system by these three nations. The group decided to meet the Chief Minister "very soon" to take up the matter with him, said PCG member Lachit Bordoloi.
The PCG accused the Centre of not taking "requisite steps" to expedite the peace process with the ULFA. It alleged that while the ULFA had showed undeclared and unwritten restraint during the recent Assam Assembly elections, the security forces have been carrying on with "unprovoked" arrests and killing of ULFA cadres. The PCG has so far held two rounds of discussions with the Centre.
