COURTESY CALL: CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat calling on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in New Delhi on Tuesday.
NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat on Tuesday called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here and discussed the political situation. Mr. Karat welcomed Mr. Karunanidhi on his first visit to the capital after assuming office. Mr. Karunanidhi apprised the CPI (M) leader of the steps being undertaken by his Government to fulfil the poll promises. Mr. Karat spoke to the Chief Minister about current developments such as the hike in prices of petrol and diesel, the move to hike issue price of commodities under the public distribution system and the general rise in prices of essential commodities. On Monday, commenting ahead of the petrol/diesel prices hike, Mr. Karunanidhi said that the Centre was not responsible for it since international oil prices were going up. At the same time, the voice of the Left parties could not be ignored, he had said and suggested that a way had to be found. He, however, ruled out the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam joining any protest being planned against the hike.
