`Mani kinar a remnant of Chera kingdom'

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The historian M.S. Jayaprakash has said that the `mani kinar' discovered at Cheranallur is a historical remnant of the Chera kingdom.

The Chera kingdom was a cradle of Dravida and Buddhist cultures. Kodungalloor situated near Cheranallur was the capital of Chera kings. The mani kinar has the style of the megalithic period. It was introduced by the builders having Buddhist traditions, Dr. Jayaprapash says. Such tanks were constructed for irrigation purposes as well.
