THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: S.K. Prasanna Kumar, a health inspector with a primary health centre in Aanad, has claimed to have devised an eco-friendly method to dispose of garbage and faeces. Addressing presspersons at the Collectorate here on Tuesday, in the presence of District Collector N. Ayyappan, Mr. Kumar said the pit built using a special `key-bed' made of dry leaves and micro-organisms' would filter the water that reached the pit along with solid waste before getting absorbed in the ground. The remaining waste would be eliminated through an eco-bio action. The process would prevent mosquitoes and rodents from breeding in the locality and helped keep the surroundings clean and odour-free, he said. The eco-bio pit for collecting sewage was only three-foot deep and could be built with ease. The pit was beneficial especially for people with only a limited land area. The method helped prevent air, water and soil from getting contaminated and also avoided the usage of cement, sand and metal used in the construction of septic tanks, he said. According to him, the disposal methods have been certified and approved by various persons, including the District Collector, the State Planning Board, the Department of Science and Environment, a committee deputed by the former Planning Board secretary S.M. Vijayanand, representatives of Greens, an environmental organisation of Secretariat employees, municipal chairman of Nedumangad and panchayat presidents of Aanad and Vellanad.
